Music

New Music Diary, 01 June 2026

It’s time I got this account moving, so I’m going to write about music that is new to me, either in physical form or otherwise…

Maisie Peters – Florescence
I’ve long been a fan of well-crafted female pop, and was fortunate to discover Maisie Peters just before the release of Florescence, her third album. Pop it definitely is – and maybe a couple of tracks too long – but her “who gives a fuck?” attitude, notably opener “Mary Janes”, has more in common with Boygenius than most radio-friendly mush. Honest, refreshing and brutal in all the right places. Already a strong candidate for my favourite album of 2026.

Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother (Hakone Aphrodite 50th Ed)
At the other end of the musical spectrum comes this Japanese edition of Atom Heart Mother, which includes the CD album, a Blu-Ray of a 1971 Japan concert, photos, ticket replicas etc in a neat 7″ package. More a curiosity than anything, but a worthy addition to my Floyd collection.

Getdown Services
I discovered “Britain’s Best Band” on a recent episode of Later…with Jools Holland, mesmerised by shouting about hitting their head, then hanging their socks, on a radiator over some rather intense beats. This disco-punk-shouty duo’s debut album is called “Crisps”, and their second is out in August. They’re playing in Melbourne as I write this, which makes me a little sad. I’m hooked.

Tomora – Come Closer
As a fan of both Aurora and the Chemical Brothers I’ve been following this one closely, and finally picked up the vinyl this week. Maybe I’m getting old, but I only find this listenable in short bursts. I’ll keep trying.

Taylor Swift – Reputation (picture disc)
Was very happy to pick up a second-hand double picture disc of this in excellent condition. Yet to receive the full “Taylor’s Version” treatment, only a few re-recorded songs are confirmed to exist, including “Delicate” which is one of my favourite TS tracks. Bracing myself for Toy Story 5 collabs…

Added to my pre-order & watch list…
Wet Leg – Moisturizer Deluxe Edition (10/7)
Alex Lloyd – Watching Angels Mend (25th ann, first time on vinyl 10/7)
New Order – The Best Of & Rest Of (Remaster, first time on vinyl 17/7)
